As the new year approaches, we are reflecting on all that has happened with TCC this past year ✨ One of our most successful and meaningful events was the summer Open House and BBQ, held on the site of the future Tamil Community Centre at 311 Staines Road!

Over 300 people got the chance to get a taste of the programming that is planned to be at the centre! We had yoga, kuthu zumba, dance therapy, and children’s poetry workshops with some amazing local Tamil vendors. Attendees also got the chance to engage with local organizations and connect with other community members.

We thank everyone for their continued support for the TCC! We can’t wait to share what’s in store - stay tuned for exciting updates! 🙌🏾

We envision that the Tamil Community Centre will become a place to host a variety of engaging and enriching classes and workshops that cater to all ages and interests. Picture vibrant art classes fostering creativity, Tamil language classes preserving and celebrating our heritage, cooking workshops bringing traditional recipes to life, and dance and music sessions filled with rhythm and joy. These versatile spaces will buzz with activity, offering opportunities for personal growth, cultural connection, and community building. In addition, the flexible rooms can be adapted for special events, ensuring they remain a cornerstone of collaboration and cultural celebration within our community.

Introducing our next programming feature: Meeting Rooms + Work Spaces ✨

The meeting rooms will vary in size from smaller rooms for one-on-one meetings, counselling appointments, mentoring and quiet study, to larger rooms that will create community hubs. The larger rooms will be equipped with desks and workstations that will be available to community organizations and non-profits who lack the resources to lease office spaces. We imagine these larger rooms being the dynamic centre of community activity and cross-pollination of ideas between longstanding community organizations and newer startups working on innovative solutions to community concerns. In non-working hours, these spaces can double as venue spaces for organization events, networking and social events, as well as for smaller performances, film screenings and readings.

Community Spaces at the Tamil Community Centre are thoughtfully designed to serve as vibrant hubs for connection, culture, and learning, while nurturing the richness of Tamil heritage. These spaces will host a variety of events, from cultural celebrations to educational workshops, ensuring they meet the diverse needs of the community.

Dedicated areas will highlight Tamil history, arts, and crafts through rotating exhibits, while multipurpose rooms will support everything from language lessons to group discussions and special events. These spaces can become a children’s playroom for a safe and engaging environment for young minds to explore and grow, while activity spaces for seniors and community members can offer programs promoting wellness, and social engagement.

Whether it’s hosting special events, enjoying family time, or participating in activities that bring generations together, these spaces will truly be a cornerstone for cultural preservation and community unity.

Introducing TCC’s next programming feature: Outdoor Spaces ✨

The grounds of the community centre will be used for outdoor playing fields, where soccer, lacrosse, and perhaps even smaller games of cricket could be scheduled for children and youth in the area, as playing fields are in short supply in the neighborhood. Sections of the grounds close to the building will be reserved for beautiful landscaping to complement the stunning Rouge National Park that backs onto the grounds. We will devote a section of the grounds for community gardening, where people of all ages in the neighborhood can gather and share their gardening practices and tips. We can see the produce becoming part of a community farmers’ market that draws the neighborhood closer together. Unused areas will be devoted to rewilding in keeping with the priorities of Indigenous communities and the environmental aspirations of the community centre.

TCC’s next programming feature: Movement Studios ✨

Movement studios:
Dance studios are in high demand in our community, but we also see the possibility of these studios to be a place to practice martial arts like silambaattam (stick fighting), yoga for all ages, children’s music and dance, and space for physical therapy movement. The community centre will hold two movement studios equipped with mirrored walls and dance studio quality floors to allow for safe and comfortable movement practice.

Introducing TCC’s next programming feature: the much anticipated Auditorium! ✨

The state-of-the-art auditorium will feature fixed seating, wheelchair accessible seating, a raised stage and professional lighting and AV to become a sought-after location for community performances. Tamil cultural forms like Bharatanatyam, theatre, koothu as well as musical performances, film screenings, comedy and contemporary dance will flourish in a space that aims to be an affordable cultural resource without compromising on quality. Many communities in the area would value and benefit from such a cultural resource to grow a range of artforms through the many diverse arts organizations in our vibrant city, and we see some lively arts festivals happening in this community centre. The auditorium could also be used for conferences, symposiums and lectures, with the atrium space outside acting as a lively reception area.

Introducing TCC’s next programming feature: the gymnasium! ✨

The gymnasium will meet the recreational needs of the immediate neighbourhood, as well as host games by some of the many Tamil sports organizations in the city. Built to accommodate basketball, volleyball and badminton games, the gym will also have a walking track that can be especially useful for seniors to stay active and healthy in the colder months. When not in use for athletics, the gym can double as a venue to host neighborhood events and gatherings, parties and community banquets.

தமிழ் சமூக மையத்தின் அடுத்த நிரலாக்க அம்சத்தை அறிமுகப்படுத்துகின்றோம்: உடற்பயிற்சிக்கூடம்! ✨

Introducing TCC’s first programming feature: the Library + Archives space!

Libraries are vital to the preservation and growth of knowledge and culture. The library at the Tamil Community Centre is elevated to show its prominence to the community. It will hold a special collection of books by Tamil authors in Tamil and English, as well as by other authors relevant to the neighbourhood communities. The library will have an archive where valuable research materials will be securely stored and available to the community. Sections of the library space will be used for themed museum exhibits and art exhibits on a rotating basis, drawing from Tamil history, memorials, crafts and fine arts. The library will be a place for quiet reading, group study, story time for children, research and language lessons. It can host book launches, art exhibits and receptions, workshops and special educational talks as well.

எமது கலாச்சாரங்களை பாதுகாக்கவும் அறிவினை விருத்தி செய்வதற்கும் நூலகங்கள் மிகவும் இன்றியமையாதவை. தமிழ் சமூக மையத்தில் உருவாக்கப்படும் நூலகமானது அதன் முக்கியத்துவத்தை எமது சமூகத்திற்கு எடுத்துக் காட்டும். இந்த நூலகத்தில் தமிழ் எழுத்தளார்களால் எழுதப்பட்ட தமிழ் மற்றும் ஆங்கில நூல்களும் சுற்றயல் பகுதி மக்களின் வாழ்வியலோடு தொடர்பான நூல்களும் இடம்பெறும். ஆத்துடன் மிக முக்கியமான ஆய்வுகளின் பிரதிகளும் சமூகத்தின் எதிர்காலப் பயன்பாட்டிற்காக பேணிப்பாதுகாக்கப்படும். இந்த நூலகத்தின் ஒரு பகுதியானது அருங்காட்சியகமாக உருவாக்கப்படும். அங்கு வேறுபட்ட கருப்பொருள்களில் அமையும் ஓவியங்களும் பொருட்களும் சுழற்சி முறையில் காட்சிப்படுத்தப்படும். இதன் மூலம் தமிழ் மக்களின் வாழ்வியல் வரலாறு பண்பாடு போன்றவற்றை எமது அடுத்த தலைமுறை அறிந்து கொள்ளும் வாய்ப்பு ஏற்படுத்தப்படும். நூலகமானது அமையதியான வாசிப்புக்கான சூழல் கொண்டமையும், அதே நேரம் குழந்தைகளுக்கான கதை நேரம், ஆராய்ச்சி மற்றும் மொழி ஆற்றலை வளப்படுத்தும் வகுப்புகள் போன்றவற்றை முன்னெடுப்பதற்கான வாய்ப்புகளை வழங்குவதன் மூலம் அதன் பல்பரிமாணத் தன்மையினை வெளிப்படுத்தும். இந்த நூலகம் நூல் அறிமுக நிகழ்வுகள் மற்றும் கண்காட்சிகள், உரையாடல் பொழுதுகள் போன்றவற்றை நடத்துவதற்கான இட வசதியினையும் வழங்கும்.

Whether you are an existing volunteer or a new volunteer hoping to join our team and contribute to this project, come meet us and find out more! We aim to gather like-minded individuals to promote and strengthen our community together. Plus, you’ll get to meet industry professionals, and we’re treating all our amazing volunteers to a delicious lunch as a token of our appreciation.
